ACADI supports a diverse portfolio of Australian-led research projects, including fully funded, seed-funded and affiliated initiatives that aim to improve outcomes for people affected by diabetes and its complications.

By fostering collaboration across research, healthcare and industry, ACADI helps translate innovative ideas into meaningful health impact. Many projects involve national and international collaborators, enabling access to broader expertise, multi-centre research opportunities, and global perspectives while maintaining a strong focus on addressing local healthcare priorities.

Our Research Portfolio Matrix

ACADI-affiliated research is organised into four broad categories: Discovery Science, Prevention, Diagnosis, and Management. Within these categories, projects are further classified according to their modality or innovation type, including Behavioural Interventions, Digital Health, Health Service Innovation, Medical Devices, and New Therapeutics.

The matrix below provides an overview of ACADI’s research portfolio and highlights the focus areas represented across our projects.

Understanding the Research Categories
Discovery Science
Research that advances our understanding of the biological, clinical and social factors that contribute to diabetes and its complications. This work provides the foundation for future innovations in prevention, diagnosis and management.
Prevention
Research focused on reducing the risk, incidence or progression of diabetes and its complications. This includes approaches that support early intervention, behaviour change and improved population health outcomes.
Diagnosis
Research that improves the detection, assessment and monitoring of diabetes and its complications. This includes the development and evaluation of new tools, technologies and clinical approaches that enable earlier and more accurate diagnosis.
Management
Research aimed at improving the treatment, care and long-term outcomes of people living with diabetes and its complications. This includes strategies that support self-management, clinical decision-making and healthcare delivery.
Understanding the Innovation Types
Behavioural Interventions
Programs, strategies or tools designed to influence health behaviours, support self-management, or improve engagement with care.
Digital Health
Technology-enabled solutions that support the prevention, diagnosis, monitoring or management of diabetes and its complications, including software, mobile applications, data platforms and artificial intelligence.
Health Service Innovation
New or improved models of care, service delivery approaches or healthcare systems designed to improve access, efficiency, quality of care and patient outcomes.
Medical Devices
Physical technologies, instruments or equipment used to prevent, detect, monitor or manage diabetes and its complications.
New Therapeutics
Novel treatments developed to prevent, treat or manage diabetes and its complications, including medicines, biologics and other therapeutic approaches.
